Along the way Alice, with Charlie’s help, learns how to be happy even after her beloved aunt is gone. It was a fun story about pie, family and a cranky old cat. I can see a great discussion happening with this novel. Alice was an interesting character, very much her own person which was encouraged by her aunt. Sarah Weeks has done a fantastic job describing Aunt Polly’s pies. The mystery is filled with interesting characters like the bodybuilding spinster principal of Alice’s school, the publicity-driven mayor, and Charlie, Alice’s friend who wants to help her solve the mystery. Some imagery helped the reader know it was during this time period, such as the big brass key she would hang around her neck, the big-green Chevrolet, the blouses that were worn, and hat made of feathers. At the end, forty years later, it brings us back to 1995. Many women in town were baking pies, hoping to finally have a chance to win the coveted Blueberry medal that Polly had easily won 13 years in a row.

Polly’s famous shop was losing business since it was destroyed and Polly was gone. How could a cat own a pie crust recipe? Then Lardo disappeared, and Alice feared he had been catnapped. Someone broke into the pie shop and vandalized it while searching for the recipe. In her will, Polly left her secret pie crust recipe to her very huge and very unfriendly white cat, Lardo. No one was sadder than Alice, who dearly loved her aunt.

All the local pie bakers wanted to know the recipe for Polly’s pie crust, which had won her many awards, called Blueberries, but that recipe was the one and only thing that Polly refused to share. When the Associated Press printed the story, Polly and her pies became famous overnight, and people came from all over the country. Pie ingredients mysteriously appeared each morning on Polly’s doorstep, and were turned into wonderful pies with crusts that were amazingly delicious.Ī reporter for the local newspaper wrote an article about Polly and her pies. She just could not bring herself to accept money for doing what she loved to do, bake delicious pies. What was most unusual about the shop was that Polly never charged for her pies. Alice spent many happy hours with her Aunt Polly at the shop, keeping her company, being an extra pair of hands, and learning a lot about the art and science of pie making in the process.
